Review 43 – The Rum Diary

Fun locations, good actors and pretty women don’t always result in fun movies.

The Rum Diary

Why I Saw It: Johnny Depp portraying Hunter S Thompson, getting crazy drunk, hanging out with Amber Heard in an exotic location? What’s not to like?

Memorable Performances: Johnny Depp and Aaron Eckhart were probably the only two entertaining aspects of this film. Giovanni Ribisi did a great job, but two years from now I probably won’t remember his character.

The Regrettable Aspects: When Amber Heard is one of the selling points for an R rated movie which features a fair bit of debauchery, you’d think they’d find a way to include some sort of sensuality, but this film rates very low in that regard.

Would I watch it again? I’d rather not. If someone mentioned they wanted to see it, I’d probably advise against it.

Rating: 6.5 out of 10

Potential Nominations for Film Quest ’12:

  • Best Supporting Actor – Giovanni Ribisi

Lastly, I’m also looking into different formats for my reviews, because quite honestly the long versions with paragraphs won’t cut it… and most people just skim through them anyway. Suggestions / critiques welcomed.
