Word coming out of Hollywoodland says that Disney has set in motion a deal to buy LucasFilm, which should strike both fear AND excitement amongst Star Wars fans.
The intention at this point is to release a new Star Wars film, tentatively titled Episode VII, in 2015 and to release at least two more films to complete a third trilogy. Each of those subsequent films is slated to be released in two year increments.
What will George Lucas’ role be in the project? He came up with the storyline for the three new films, which are said to continue the Skywalker saga where Return Of The Jedi left off, but the extent of his involvement is to “serve as creative consultant in the new movies”.
In an interview posted on YouTube, Lucas stated “I’m doing this so that the films will have a longer life … I get to be a fan now … I sort of look forward to it. It’s a lot more fun actually, than actually having to go out into the mud and snow. … It’s now time for me to pass ‘Star Wars’ on to a new generation of filmmakers”
Current co-chairman of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy will serve as Executive Producer for the new Star Wars movies.
As the sole owner, Lucas reportedly gets half his $4 BILLION purchase price in cash, the other half in stock options. Disney not only gets Lucasfilm, but also obtains the innovative and valuable Industrial Light & Magic company as well as Skywalker Sound and rights to the “Indiana Jones” franchise which has already released 4 films.
Questions to Consider
Are the new films going to be live action?
Would Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and some of the voice talents (Yoda, Chewie, C3PO, etc) return for the project?
What of cross-over in other media, such as a video game including Marvel characters and Star Wars characters?
“Too Long; Didn’t Read” Summary
TL;DR – Disney now owns Star Wars, new films in 2015, 2017 & 2019 are planned. Lucas will just be a creative consultant.
